Welcome to the
official site for fantasy author S. A. Bolich. From an embattled Firedancer
discovering frightening
things about the elemental enemy of her people to an immortal addicted
to death, from a prince with the power to free the gods to a hangman whose
search for justice leads him to an unexpected and heartwrenching choice, the worlds of S. A.
Bolich are unexpected, fascinating - and places you won't soon want to leave.
Read or listen
to the first chapter of Firedancer, a "marvelous fantasy
adventure outside the usual boxes."

The Genre Traveler just posted a 30-minute podcast
starring yours truly. It's a wide-ranging interview talking about the
origins of Firedancer (what DO elemental fire and knapweed have in common,
eh?), my time in the military, my alternate history series springing from
the witch trials in Salem, and much more. You can listen to it here.
September 29, 2011
There's one day left to win a free copy of Firedancer.
Just post a relevant comment on the most recent post on my blog

"...pure high-quality work. The first scene drops
you into the conflict, sets up the tension, and it rolls on from there,
carrying the reader along...In a world where writers from the Big Publishers frequently annoy me with
their expectedness, their mundaneness, or the obvious strings on the
puppets, this was a rare treat...marvelous fantasy adventure, outside the
usual boxes."
"...Interesting characters that draw you into
their world, descriptions that create vivid pictures of places and actions.
Interaction among the characters flows well and makes the reader feel like
an observer, watching from a quiet corner of the scene."

Recently at Worldcon I gave a short interview to Karian
Fabian about the sensory details in Firedancer. View it on YouTube.
Yes, you can tell it was a sleepless night and a early morning. It was
Worldcon, after all!

In addition to Firedancer
and Who
Mourns for the Hangman? in the Kindle store at Amazon (and elsewhere), I
have stories in two anthologies: No
Man's Land, and now Wolfsongs
2, featuring my story "Wolf Dreams."
Eleven
French men-at-arms make a terrible mistake one awful night, and end up
cursed to immortality, forever fearing the full moon. One's vow to end the
curse drives him for centuries, across Earth, across the galaxy and
beyond...
Find this collection of wolf-themed stories here.

Firedancer is now up on Smashwords.
This the first of three novels chronicling the mystery of why the Elementals
have suddenly spun out of the control of the talented clans tasked since the
Beginning with controlling the encroachments of Wind and Fire and Water upon
Earth Mother. Why is the Ancient, Old Man Fire, attacking Annam Vale, where
it has never dared poked a single flame up before? Jetta ak'Kal had better
find out quickly, or all the world will know the meaning of firestorm...
August

Firedancer is now available on Amazon!
It will be up shortly on Smashwords, on Sony, Barnes and Noble, Apple, and
all other major ebook outlets as well.

Worldcon has come and gone and it was wonderful to see
so many of you. Congratulations to all the Hugo winners!
I will be at Orycon in Portland, OR from 11-13
November. That will be the last con I will attend this year, I believe. I
hope to see you again there and to be able to read from Firedancer again. I
really enjoyed the opportunity at Worldcon, and the reaction to the story
was very kind. The book should be available on Amazon this week or
next.
August

The cover of Firedancer is
finished. The wonderful Mitch Bentley has delivered a delightful rendition
of the Firedancer world and the heroine. This alternate- world fantasy comes
out September 1, 2011, and you can get a sneak peek at the first chapter here.
July 25, 2011
I have received my schedule for Worldcon. I'll be
reading from Firedancer at 10:00 on Friday Aug
19 in room A15 (RSCC) at the Broad Universe Rapid Fire Reading. Then at noon
on Friday I'll be in the same room, reading from "Falling
to Eternity" at the No Man's Land reading. See you there!
July 15, 2011
Have I mentioned that I will be at Spocon (August
12-14, Spokane, WA) and then at Worldcon (August 17-21, Reno)? And it looks
like I'll be at Orycon in Portland, OR over Veterans Day. You can hear me
read from No
Man's Land at Worldcon and Firedancer at
the other two (but I'll have cool stuff to give away at all of them). Hope
to see you there!
July 10, 2011
The final, edited version of Firedancer was approved
today and now goes to layout, etc. in preparation for its release in
September. You can get a sneak peek at the new and official Chapter 1 here.
June 24, 2011
Beneath Ceaseless Skies is putting out a Year 2
anthology and asking readers to vote on their favorite stories. My own
story, "Kraken's
Honor" is eligible! If you'd like to vote for it, the link is here.
June 14, 2011
It's been a busy couple of weeks, what with Miscon and
finishing revisions for Firedancer. The Kindle
version of "No Man's Land" is now available, however, for
those of you who prefer e-pubs to print. Now you have no excuse not to go
check out this excellent collection of military SF stories.
May 23, 2011
I'll be at MisCon in Missoula, MT this weekend, May
27-30, sitting in on the writers workshop and two panels:
Fri 5-6: Writers Workshop Meet and Greet (Dungeon)
Sat 11-2: Writer's Workshop (Great Hall)
Sun 11-12: Military Intelligence for Writers & GMs (Great Hall)
Sun 1-2: Horses 101 for Storytellers (Great Hall)
Both panels draw on my own background in military
intelligence and a lifetime spent with horses, so it should be a lot of fun.
And, I'll be giving away copies of No Man's Land, so come sit in for a
chance to read this collection of stories with its intro by David Weber,
author of the best-selling Honorverse series.
May 10, 2011
Milscifi.com
posted an interview with me today, touching on the inspiration for
"Falling to Eternity" and other interesting things. Well,
interesting to me, anyway...
May 3, 2011
No Man's Land is out! The anthology with my story
"Falling to Eternity" is now available both from Dark
Quest Books and on Amazon.
The stories look delicious just from the titles, and David Weber wrote the
introduction. As the man who created the best-selling Honor Harrington
series of military SF, he knows whereof he speaks when it comes to kick-ass
heroines and exciting future combat. This anthology is dedicated to women in
the military, so show your support and go check it out.
April 25, 2011
Miscon is coming (Memorial Day weekend) and I'll be
there in Missoula, Montana. This is a new con for me and I'm looking forward
to seeing new faces in new places. I'm also on some really interesting
panels, and I'll be helping out with the writers' workshop, which I always
enjoy. I hope to have the No Man's Land anthology in hand by then, with the
introduction by David Weber. I'll be giving away a copy to someone at the
reading, so come on down!
April 24, 2011
Home from Norwescon, and what fun it was! Thanks to all of
you who came to my readings. I appreciate your comments and support, and I hope
you enjoyed the stories as much as I enjoyed meeting you.
April 18, 2011
Did I mention I'll be Norwescon this coming weekend? I'll
be seeing several of you in the writers' workshops, and good on you for
submitting work for critique! I also will be doing readings:
- 10:30 a.m. on Friday in the Cascade Room (An Infinity of
Moments)
- Broad Universe reading (with chocolate!) Friday at 9:00
p.m. in the Cascade Room (Falling to Eternity)
- Beneath Ceaseless Skies reading Saturday between 7 and
8:30 p.m. in the Salon (Kraken's Honor)
And I have really cool bookmarks!
April 7, 2011
Dark Quest Books is going all out for "No Man's Land,
Defending the Future IV." Every author in the anthology gets a unit patch.
Here's mine, designed by Mike McPhail. Pretty cool, huh? Did I say that David
Weber wrote the introduction? Here's what he has to say about No Man's
Land:
"This
collection has a lot going for it […] there's not a single piece here that
isn't well worth reading. I modestly—but confidently—predict that I will
be very far from the only man who's very, very glad he's read this collection." —David Weber, best-selling author of the
Honor
Harrington series.
I am very much looking forward to seeing "Falling to Eternity" in
this collection, in such good company.

No, this isn't an April Fool! This is the actual cover art
from the upcoming Defending the Future IV anthology, No Man's Land,
featuring my story, "Falling to Eternity." With an introduction by
best-selling author David Weber, this is one to watch for when it comes out in
May. I am really looking
forward to reading all the other stories from some really great authors!
March 30, 2011
My novel "Firedancer" has been accepted by Sky
Warrior Books for publication in September! Meet Jetta, a failed Dancer who must
discover why the Ancient, the elemental fire at the heart of the world that her
people have battled for all of time, is suddenly acting in ways the Dance can no
longer predict--or control. Read an excerpt here.

I'm eligible for the Campbell award! A kind friend pointed
this out to me. The John W. Campbell award for best new writer in the science
fiction or fantasy genres is awarded every year at Worldcon. If you are
attending Worldcon this year (Renovation), I hope you take the time to check out
my qualifying story, "Kraken's
Honor", at Beneath Ceaseless Skies (December 3, 2009). I'd really love
your vote!
February 22, 2011
Well, Radcon was a hoot, and it was a delight to see so
many old friends and new. Hope to catch you at Norwescon on Easter weekend in
Seattle!

I have my Radcon schedule! These should be fun:
Friday, 2/18: Breathing Life into Your Writing
(4:00-5:00, Ruby room)
Friday: Animals in Fiction (6:00-7:00, Emerald)
Friday: Opening Ceremonies, 7-9
Saturday: 2/19: The Muddle in the Middle (1:00-2:00, Ruby)
Saturday: What is all About? (3:00-4:00, Ruby)
Saturday: What Makes a Successful Critique Group? (6:00-7:00, Ruby)
I hope I'll see some of you there!
January 17, 2011
I'll be a panelist at Radcon, (February 17-20), Norwescon
(April 21-24) and MisCon (May 27-30) this year, and participating in the
writer's workshops helping other writers. Hopefully I'll catch some of you
there!
January 16, 2011
Last year I was invited to submit a story to the Wolfsongs
II anthology, edited by M. H. Bonham, which is, unsurprisingly, wolf-themed. She
said to avoid werewolves unless I had something really new to say. Since all I
could conjure was "werewolves in space", guess what they got? An SF
werewolf story. "Wolf Dreams" sold to the anthology today, I'm happy
to say!
December 25, 2010
"Falling to Eternity," an SF short story about a
squad leader trying to discover the traitor on her outpost, was accepted for the
No Man's Land anthology, part of the award-winning Defending the Future
series.

Woohoo! After a long journey, my short story "An
Infinity of Moments" is the lead story in the Fall 2010 edition of On
Spec. This is one of my favorite short stories, and I am very grateful to
Diane Walton and her staff for helping me bring it to its full potential.
August 3, 2010
SpoCon was a hoot, and I'm so glad to have had the chance
to meet so many of you. Thanks for coming out!

July 21, 2010
I'll be at SpoCon from July 30-August 1 in Spokane,
Washington. I have a reading at 4:00 on Friday afternoon and I'm on a couple of
panels throughout the weekend. Come on out! I'd love to meet you!
June 16, 2010
I did a guest
blog at Damnation Books today on the perils and reward of writing dark
fiction. Go check it out!
April 11, 2010
My Weird Western short fantasy "Wishes and
Horses" has been accepted by Tales of Moreauvia for publication this fall.
Nice!
April 8, 2010
Norwescon was excellent. The writers' workshops there are
impressive and I got some excellent ideas for present and future work. And I
acquired a great hat! (One should really be careful in the dealers' room. So
much great stuff!) I'm looking forward to seeing new friends and old at the next
con, which at this moment will be SpoCon in Spokane, WA this summer.
March 26, 2010
I'm heading off to Norwescon in Seattle April 1-4, which
should be a lot of fun. I hope I'll see a lot of you there!
March 13, 2010
Here's another good review of "Who
Mourns for the Hangman?", which seems to touch a chord in everyone who
reads the story. The reviewer says, "Who Mourns for the Hangman is
an imaginative dark fantasy that is sure to thrill all who read it."
You can download a copy at Damnation
Books or as a Kindle e-book at Amazon.
February 17, 2010
I should Google myself more often. I just found this old
Tangent Online review
of my very first published story, "Where Magic Lives," which earned an
Honorable Mention in the Year's Best Fantasy and Horror for that year. It was
originally published in On Spec, which has another of my stories, "An
Infinity of Moments," in the queue to publish, hopefully sometime this
year.
February 16, 2010
I will be giving an interview on Blog
Talk Radio Tuesday, February 16th at 5:30 Pacific time, (7:30 Central, 8:30
Eastern). Call in and listen to my report on RadCon and the inspiration behind
"Who Mourns for the Hangman?"
Come along and listen!
February 15, 2010
A couple of favorable reviews of Kraken's Honor have wended
their way to my mailbox:
From Matthew Denton at Novel
Musings
From Maegan Bergstrom at Maegan's
Musings
From Lois Tilton at Internet
Review of Science Fiction
February 11-14, 2010
I'll be at Radcon in Pasco, Washington. I hear this is a
great con and a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to the panel I'm on: "For
Want of a Nail" which discusses alternate history, a subject near and dear
to my heart. Hope to see some of you there!
January 23, 2010
"Who Mourns for the Hangman?"
placed in the top 10 in the Preditors and Editors Poll (tied for 5th), out of 95
entries. Not bad!
January 9, 2010
"Who Mourns for the Hangman?" is up
for best SF or fantasy story of 2009 at the Preditors and Editors readers poll
at Critters Workshop. You can vote for Hangman or any of your favorite stories here.
Naturally, I hope you'll vote for me!
December 16, 2009
I have a guest post up on Naomi
Clark's site today, and an interview at Imperfect
Clarity.
December 13, 2009
Kari Wolfe of Niteblade Magazine did an

Another good review of "Who Mourns for the

and Muse. And I notice that this e-book is now available in the UK at Direct
Ebooks. It's priced in pounds, euros, and dollars, so take your choice.

I'll be at the World Fantasy Convention in San Jose,
California. I haven't attended before so I'm looking forward to it. I hope to
run into some of you there.
September 7, 2009
Another favorable review of Who Mourns for the
Hangman from The
Horror Press.
September 1, 2009
Damnation Books debuts with my story Who
Mourns for the Hangman? as an ebook. Currently it is in the top 10 sellers
of the 25 titles released.
August 17, 2009
Two favorable reviews are posted, of "Message in the Dust" at Tangent Online,
and "Who Mourns for the Hangman?" at Rites
of Romance Reviews (for a horror story!).
June 20, 2009
"4000
Roads to Hell" is accepted by Third
Order Magazine for publication in Summer, 2009. This weird Western wonders
why people are so much readier to accept odd events as works of Hell instead of
Heaven.

May 1, 2009
"Who Mourns for the Hangman?"
is
accepted by Damnation Books
for publication in September 2009. This is dark, period fantasy in which a

"Kraken's

This is high fantasy, in which an exiled prince is forced to
discover if the gods his house once betrayed are still
angry.

March 16, 2009
"The
Master of the Bones" is accepted by Pangaia
for publication in spring or summer 2010. When a group of farmers encounter
the world's oldest being, the outcome is both magical and not what
anyone expected. This is gentle, modern fantasy in a rural
setting.

"Eternity's Child," an SF short story about an
encounter with an alien artifact, receives an Honorable Mention from Writers of the Future, which puts it in the top 5-15% of entries received.

January 11, 2009
"Message in the Dust" is accepted by Science Fiction Trails
anthology, Issue 4,
Spring 2009. Now available here. This
is a somewhat unusual weird Western with a strong SF element.
Two explorers find something that forces them to weigh courage
against foolhardiness, wisdom against curiosity.
I really love that cheating robot on the
cover!
Read a review.
November 13,
2008
"An
Infinity of Moments" is accepted by On
Spec magazine, publishing date TBD.
On Spec also very kindly accepted my
first published short story, "Where Magic Lives," back
in the Summer 2002 issue. They might even still have a copy or
two to buy. This story received an Honorable Mention in the
Year's Best Fantasy and Horror anthology.
